What Size Pendant Light for a Hallway?

For a standard UK hallway with a 2.4m ceiling, keep the bottom of the fitting at least 2.1m off the floor, and choose a shade no wider than a third of the hallway. On a typical 1m-wide hall, that means something around 30–35cm across.

That is the answer. The rest of this is what changes when your hallway isn't standard, which most hallways aren't.

Why clearance comes first

In every other room, you position a pendant relative to something — a table, an island, a bed. A hallway has none of that. It has a floor people walk across, and that makes head clearance the governing constraint rather than an afterthought.

2.1m is the working minimum. Below that, tall people notice it, and anyone carrying a box or a suitcase notices it more. If your ceiling is the common UK 2.4m, that leaves you roughly 30cm of drop to play with — chain, flex, rose and all. It is less room than people expect, and it rules out most long-drop pendants immediately.

Getting the width right

Hallways are narrow, and width is where the mistakes happen.

A fitting wider than about a third of the hall reads as an obstruction even when it is nowhere near head height. On a 90cm hallway that puts your ceiling at a 30cm shade. On a 1.2m hall, 40cm.

For a sense of scale: the Langdon Lantern in medium measures 354mm across. On a generous 1.1m hallway that sits comfortably. In a narrow Victorian passage it would be the wrong choice, and the small is the honest answer instead.

Measure the hall at its narrowest point, not the widest. Halls tend to pinch near doorways, and that pinch is where the fitting will feel tight.

Why a lantern suits a hallway

There is a reason lanterns dominate this room.

A solid shade throws light down. In a room with a surface to light, that is exactly right. In a hallway there is nothing below to catch it, so a downward-facing pendant produces a bright pool on the floor and dark walls above — which makes a narrow space read as narrower still.

A glazed lantern lights outward as well as down. The walls carry the light, the corridor effect softens, and the space feels wider than it measures. The same logic explains why hallway wall lights work so well in pairs.

Ceiling height changes everything

The figures above assume a flat 2.4m ceiling. Two situations break them.

Low ceilings, under 2.3m. A pendant may not be the right fitting at all. A flush or semi-flush ceiling light gives you the same light without the clearance problem, and it is not a compromise — it is the correct answer for the space.

Double-height halls and stairwell voids. The opposite problem. Here a small pendant looks stranded, and the room can carry something substantially larger. The rule of thumb is to fill roughly the middle third of the vertical space rather than hugging the ceiling. This is the one hallway situation where a chandelier belongs.

For stairwells specifically, measure the drop so the bottom of the fitting sits above the highest step anyone could stand on — not above the landing.

More than one pendant

Long halls, over about 4m, often want two fittings rather than one large one.

Space them evenly along the length and keep them clear of doorways. Two medium lanterns in a long hall look considered. One large one at the centre leaves both ends dim.

Before you order

Three measurements, in this order. Ceiling height. Hallway width at its narrowest. Then the drop you actually need, from ceiling to the intended bottom of the fitting.

Check that last figure against the maximum drop listed on the product. Most pendants shorten easily and lengthen only with a longer flex or an extension rod.

Installation is work for a qualified electrician. Size and clearance are the parts worth getting right before they arrive.
